Reasons a tooth may need to come out
A tooth may need to come out if:
- A cavity or infection is too big to fix
- Gum disease has made the tooth loose
- A tooth is blocking other teeth from coming in
- Braces need more room to move teeth
- Wisdom teeth are causing problems
We try to save teeth first
If a tooth can be saved, a filling, crown, or root canal may be better. If a tooth does come out, we'll talk about ways to fill the gap, like an implant or a bridge. Wisdom teeth? See our wisdom teeth page.

Tooth extractions: the details
An extraction means taking a tooth out. It is most often needed when a tooth is too damaged to fix. The most common reasons are:
- A bad cavity or infection makes the tooth too hard, or too costly, to fix
- Gum disease is so bad the tooth should come out to protect your gums and bone
- A tooth is blocking other teeth from coming in
- Braces need more room to move teeth into place
- Wisdom teeth often need to come out, before or after they grow in
What to expect
First, the dentist numbs the area. During the extraction, you will feel pushing as the tooth comes out, but you should not feel pain. How long it takes depends on the tooth. The dentist will tell you what to expect before starting.
Right after, a little bleeding is normal. We put gauze on the spot. It may bleed a little for about a day and then stop. Follow our care steps, like how often to change the gauze.
FAQ
Common questions about extractions
Can I use my dental insurance?
Yes. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.
What if I don't have insurance?
No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.
Do you take out wisdom teeth?
Yes, right here in our office. We check your wisdom teeth with an X-ray first.
What should I eat after?
Stick to soft foods for the first day or two. Don't use a straw. It can loosen the clot that helps the spot heal.
Should I replace the tooth?
Often, yes. A gap can let other teeth shift. An implant or a bridge can fill it. We'll go over your options.
