Signs you may need a crown
Talk to your dentist about a crown if:
- A tooth is cracked or broken
- A cavity is too big for a filling
- You just had a root canal on a back tooth
- An old filling is very large or breaking
- A tooth is worn down or oddly shaped
When something else may be better
If enough of the tooth is healthy, an inlay or onlay can save more of it. For a small cavity, a filling may be enough. We'll tell you what fits.

Porcelain crowns: the details
A filling covers only a small part of a tooth. A crown, or cap, covers the whole top part of the tooth that you can see. The crown becomes the tooth's new outer shell.
A crown is used when a tooth is too broken or decayed for a filling to fix. It protects the tooth and makes it stronger. It also makes the tooth look better and can bring back its shape. Crowns come in different materials. Most have some porcelain, so they look and feel like a real tooth.
How it's done
At the first visit, the dentist shapes the tooth so the crown will fit. Usually a little of the tooth has to be removed. Then he copies the exact shape of your tooth and sends it to a lab. The lab makes your crown. Before you go home, you get a temporary crown to cover the tooth.
At the second visit, your new crown is back from the lab. The dentist takes off the temporary crown and tries on the new one. He makes sure it fits well and matches your teeth. Then he bonds it in place.
FAQ
Common questions about crowns
Can I use my dental insurance?
Yes. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.
What if I don't have insurance?
No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.
How long does a crown last?
With good care, a crown can last many years. Brush, floss, and don't chew ice or other hard things.
Will it look like my other teeth?
Yes. We match the color of your crown to the teeth around it.
Can a crown be whitened?
No. Whitening doesn't change the color of a crown. If you want whiter teeth, whiten first. Then we match the crown to your new shade.
