Signs you may need a filling
Talk to your dentist about a filling if:
- A tooth hurts when you eat sweets
- A tooth is sensitive to hot or cold
- You see a dark spot or hole in a tooth
- Food keeps getting stuck in the same spot
- A tooth is chipped or has a small break
When something else may be better
If a cavity is very big, a filling may not be strong enough. Then a crown, or an inlay or onlay, may be better. If the nerve is infected, you may need a root canal first. We'll tell you what fits.

Composite fillings: the details
To fix a cavity, the dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth. Then the space is filled with another material. This is called a filling. The two most common kinds are composite fillings and silver fillings, also called amalgam.
A composite filling is also called a tooth-colored filling. We can match it to the color of your teeth. Composite fillings work well for small and medium cavities. They also usually save more of your tooth than a silver filling. And they look natural, so they are great for teeth people can see.
When can a composite filling be used?
- A tooth with a cavity
- A chipped or broken tooth
- A small gap between teeth
How it's done
First, the dentist numbs the area. Then he removes the decayed part. Next, he puts a liquid on the tooth that helps the filling stick better. He hardens it with a special light. Then he adds the filling in thin layers and hardens each one. Last, he shapes and polishes the filling so it feels smooth and fits your bite.
FAQ
Common questions about fillings
Can I use my dental insurance?
Yes. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.
What if I don't have insurance?
No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.
How long do composite fillings last?
With good care, they can last many years. Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups help them last.
Can I eat after a filling?
Composite fillings are hard before you leave. But your mouth may stay numb for a few hours. Wait until it wears off so you don't bite your cheek.
Can you replace my silver fillings?
Often, yes. If an old silver filling is cracked or worn, we can talk about replacing it with a tooth-colored one.
