Root canal therapy: the details

A root canal saves a tooth that is infected. This can happen from a deep cavity or a crack. The treatment removes the soft inside of the tooth, called the pulp. The pulp has the nerve. Once a tooth is fully grown, it does not need the pulp to stay healthy.

If an infected tooth is not treated, pus can build up at the tip of the root. The infection can spread to the bone. This causes pain and swelling, and the tooth may have to come out.

The infected inside of the tooth is cleaned out, filled and sealed, then covered with a cap to protect it. 1. Clean out infection2. Fill & seal3. Cap to protect

What does the treatment involve?

First, the dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth. He removes the pulp and cleans the canals inside the roots. If the work takes more than one visit, he puts a temporary filling on the tooth to protect it. At the next visit, he removes the temporary filling and cleans the inside again. Then he seals it and puts a filling or crown on top.

Root canals work very well. Many treated teeth last a lifetime. The filling or crown on top also makes it hard for anyone to tell you had one.

FAQ

Common questions about root canals

Can I use my dental insurance?

Yes. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.

What if I don't have insurance?

No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.

Is a root canal painful?

We numb the tooth well before we start. Most people say it feels like getting a filling. The tooth may be sore for a few days after.

Will I need a crown after?

Often, yes, mostly on back teeth. A crown helps keep the tooth from breaking. We'll tell you if you need one.
