Cleanings: the details
Regular cleanings help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Even if you brush and floss well, plaque can build up in spots that are hard to reach. Over time it turns hard. Then only a hygienist can remove it. Most people should get a cleaning every six months.
How it's done
A cleaning takes about 30 minutes to an hour. A trained hygienist does the cleaning. The dentist always comes in for a checkup at the end. Most people say cleanings don't hurt at all.
There are two main steps. Step 1 is scaling. The hygienist removes plaque and tartar from your teeth. This can be done by hand or with a small electric tool. The hygienist also cleans along the gums, where plaque likes to hide.
Step 2 is polishing. This removes the last bits of plaque and makes your teeth smooth and shiny. The polisher has small tips that reach tight spots.

FAQ
Common questions about cleanings
Can I use my dental insurance?
Yes. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.
What if I don't have insurance?
No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.
How often should I get a cleaning?
Most people should come every 6 months. Some people need to come more often. We'll tell you what's best for you.
Why do my gums bleed during a cleaning?
Bleeding often means plaque is bothering your gums. It usually gets better with regular cleanings and daily flossing.
Is a cleaning the same as a checkup?
They usually happen at the same visit. The hygienist cleans your teeth. Then the dentist checks for cavities and other problems.
