Exams and X-rays: the details

Regular exams help keep your teeth and gums healthy. They can also help you avoid big, costly treatment later. The Academy of General Dentistry says people of all ages should get a checkup twice a year. That way, most problems are found while they are still small.

The dentist checks your teeth and gums, X-rays show what is hidden under the gums, and small problems are found early. 1. Check it all2. X-rays look deeper3. Catch it early

How it's done

First, the dentist looks in your mouth with a small mirror, a dental tool, and a bright light. He looks for cracked teeth and cavities. He also checks these things:

  • Your health: We ask about any new health problems that could affect your teeth.
  • Cavities: We check for teeth that are cracked or decayed.
  • Mouth cancer check: We check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gums for any signs of cancer.
  • Gum health: We check your gums and the bone around your teeth for gum disease.
  • Old fillings and crowns: We make sure they are still in good shape.

The dentist also takes X-rays to find problems you can't see, like spots below the gums. Bitewing X-rays are usually taken once a year. A panoramic X-ray, which goes all the way around your head, is taken every 3 to 5 years.

FAQ

Common questions about checkups

Can I use my dental insurance?

Yes. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.

What if I don't have insurance?

No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Yes. Dental X-rays use a very small amount of radiation. We only take them when you need them.

Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. Most people get bitewing X-rays once a year. We take others only when needed.
