Quick facts

Implants at a glance

What it is

A small post in your jaw that holds a new tooth. It works like a tooth root.

How long

Usually a few months from start to finish, so the bone can heal around the post.

Does it hurt?

We numb the area first. You feel pushing, not pain. Some soreness for a few days is normal.

Why pick it

It doesn't lean on the teeth next to it, and it can last many years with good care.

Is this right for you?

Signs an implant could help

Talk to your dentist about an implant if:

  • You're missing one or more teeth
  • Your bridge or partial is loose or wearing out
  • Your dentures slip or rub
  • A tooth needs to come out and you want to replace it
  • You want a tooth that stays in, even at night

When something else may be better

Implants need enough healthy bone and gums. Smoking and some health problems can make healing harder. A bridge may also be a good choice. We'll check with our 3D X-ray and tell you what fits.

What to expect

4 simple steps

Dental implants: the details

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is a small post, usually made of titanium, that goes into your jawbone. After it heals, it can hold a crown, a bridge, or a full set of teeth.

An implant doesn't need the teeth next to the gap to hold it up, like a bridge does. It also helps keep your jawbone strong. Without a tooth root, the bone in that spot can shrink over time.

A small post is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing, the bone heals around it, and a new crown is attached on top. 1. Place the implant2. Let it heal3. Add your tooth

Why choose an implant?

  • Looks natural: Your new tooth is matched to your other teeth.
  • Strong bite: Chew the foods you love.
  • Stays put: No slipping and no glue.
  • Protects your other teeth: We don't have to shape the teeth next to it.
  • Lasts: With good care, an implant can last many years.

How it's done

First, we take a 3D X-ray to check your bone and plan the best spot. Next, we numb the area and place the implant. Then the bone heals around it. This usually takes a few months. You may wear a temporary tooth while you heal. Last, we attach a small connector, called an abutment, and your custom crown.

Missing a lot of teeth?

If you're missing most or all of your teeth, a few implants can hold a whole new set. See All-on-X →

FAQ

Common questions about implants

Can I use my dental insurance?

Some plans cover part of an implant. Tell us your plan when you book. We check it for you before you come.

What if I don't have insurance?

No problem. Lots of our patients don't have it. We'll go over your options with you, including ways to pay over time. That way you can fix things now instead of waiting until they get worse.

How much does an implant cost?

It depends on how many teeth you're replacing and what you need. We'll go over the cost at your visit, and we offer ways to pay over time.

How long do implants last?

With good care, implants can last many years, often for life. The crown on top may need to be replaced someday.

Am I too old for implants?

Most adults can get implants. Your health and your bone matter more than your age. We'll check at your visit.
